| Papa: What was
your favorite part of working on the Backwater Bunch Project?
Joe: I would have to say creating all of the storyboards for
this project. Just watching the characters come to life with a
script we all worked so hard to refine was really satisfying. I
have to say the freedom you (Papa) gave me with the characters
was also really fun because I was not limited by anything. It
was challenging to make every creature unique and different and
pushing the boundary with each one.
Papa: Can you tell me what some of your responsibilities were
on this project?
Joe: As Art Director, it was my job to develop and
create the look for all of the characters and sets. I also
had to supervise all of the characters and set design through
their progression from sketch to final render. My job was made a
lot easier because of the talent of the crew I was working with
on this project. They were all very open to the changes I wanted
and eager to get the shots completed.

Papa: What did you do prior to working at Digital-Tutors?
Joe: Actually I came from T-shirt designs and freelance
work. I have been cartooning for years and moving into 3D was
just a natural progression. I have a strong background in
cartooning and traditional art. I have been working on my
masters degree in art education which stemmed from my previous
job as a high school art teacher.
Papa: Which character did you like the best?
Joe: I would have to say Rusty.

Papa: Why Rusty?
There is something about creating a sinister character where
he is mean but also has a soft side to him. It is really
challenging to create characters who posses both traits. He was
the first character I developed with hands and a fish body.
Actually Rusty was first drawn on a napkin as just a doodle and
I used him as inspiration to create the other characters.

Papa: So you
enjoy cartooning, teaching and 3D what do you do in your free
time? Joe: What little free time I have I like to draw and
work on a children’s book I have been developing for the past
year.
Papa: That is really cool. Do you have any illustrations from
the book you can share with our visitors?
Joe: Oh sure I’d be glad to share some of them.

Papa: Is there anything else you would like to share?
Joe: This was an incredible opportunity to spend time in
production to see my work animated at this level. It was always
a dream of mine to see my work at this stage and admired by so
many people. Thanks to my crew for working so hard with early
mornings and late evenings.
